Read full description of the books:
With topics on race, sexual orientation, gender identification, religious affiliation and the like hotly debated in this political climate and recent tragedies, I am increasingly desperate for an answer to personal identity. This is fueled by my own confusion with my own life trajectory as I prepare myself toward a career in medicine. The nature of my current work requires me to confront questions of self-identity and life purpose, as I guide my students through their "Future" with a capital F.
While I do not expect one piece of literature or philosophy to enlighten all questions about life purpose and personal identity, Perry did prompt me to consider different perceptions on the matter that I had not previously entertained. It was interesting to find how closely the causal memory theory correlated with what I have studied in Buddhism. Is identity linked to the body or the soul? Is it more to do with how two individuals at different times are connected? Or is it more a matter of convention, dependent on the person and their values and beliefs? I do not know, and perhaps I will never know. But I look forward to having more conversations about this.
